BERKELEY – A trio of Golden Bears continue to vie for permanent roster spots as they hit the halfway point of the WNBA training camps this week. Layshia Clarendon (2009-13) and Alexis Gray-Lawson (2006-10) are on the training camp rosters for the Indiana Fever and Phoenix Mercury, respectively, while Gennifer Brandon (2009-14) makes her training camp debut with the Chicago Sky.
Brandon was drafted with the 22nd pick in this year’s draft by the Chicago Sky, the reigning WNBA Eastern Conference champions. The Sky open the 2014 preseason against Indiana on Friday, May 9 at the ESPN Wide World of Sports in Orlando.
Clarendon enters her second season in the league after being drafted ninth by the Indiana Fever last year. Clarendon played in 30 games last season with four starts. The Fever’s preseason starts with three games this week with back-to-back games against Washington on Tuesday (May 6) and Wednesday (May 7) followed by Friday’s game against the Chicago Sky.
Gray-Lawson returns to the Phoenix Mercury training camp after playing for the team in 2011 and 2012. Originally a selection by the Washington Mystics, Gray-Lawson has played in 46 career games for the Mercury, who open their preseason this Friday against Minnesota at the ESPN Wide World of Sports in Orlando.
