Cal Topped by OSU, 9-3 in 10 Innings

Bears Lose in Extra Innings
By Cal Athletics on Sat, May 03, 2014

BERKELEY - Senior left-hander Kyle Porter had an outstanding outing and senior designated hitter Devon Rodriguez tied the game with an RBI single in the eighth inning, but Cal (19-23, 7-13) faltered in extra-innings and lost to No. 2-ranked Oregon State, 9-3 in 10 innings, Saturday night at Evans Diamond.

Porter threw 6.0 innings, only giving up three hits with an unearned run, two walks and eight strikeouts. The Beavers (33-8, 16-4) scored the unearned run in the third inning and scored on a wild pitch in the seventh inning to take a 2-0 lead.

But Cal was able to rally when freshman second baseman Robbie Tenerowicz singled to lead-off the eighth inning and later score on a wild pitch by OSU reliever Zack Reser. The Bears second run of the inning came when freshman center fielder Aaron Knapp had a one-out single, and after advancing to third base on Reser's wild pitch, scored on Rodriguez's two-out single through the middle of the infield.

The Bears had a chance to win the game in the bottom of the ninth inning when junior outfielder/shortstop Derek Campbell had a one-out double and advanced to third base on pinch hitter Chris Paul's infield single. Unfortunately for Cal, Tenerowicz hit into a double play to end the inning.

The game unraveled for the Bears in the top of the 10th inning when OSU got on on two infield singles. From there, the Beavers went on to bat 12 players, scoring seven runs on four hits, an error and two hits batsmen.

Cal out-hit OSU, 10-8, with Rodriquez collecting two hits.

The Bears will take on the Beavers in the third game of the series Sunday, May 4 at 1 p.m. at Evans Diamond. OSU won the Friday contest 10-4.
