BERKELEY, Calif. -- A two-run home run by senior Victoria Jones gave Cal softball control for most of its final game against No. 2 UCLA, but the Bruins ultimately won out in a tight defensive battle to defeat the Golden Bears 3-2 Sunday on Levine-Fricke Field. Cal is now 23-23 overall and 4-12 in Pac-12 play.

Though Ally Carda started the Bruins off on offense with a leadoff home run at the top of the first, the Bears otherwise held the Bruins scoreless through five innings with a stout defense.

Meanwhile, the Bear offense fought to get a score on the board and Cal was finally rewarded at the bottom of the fourth. Junior Danielle Henderson drew a walk to start the inning and was replaced by junior pinch runner Mary Lee at first base. Jones stepped up with a home run to center field and the Bears took the lead, 2-1.

Cal held on through the top of the sixth, when a Bear fielding error put Carda on base. Delaney Spaulding then doubled to right field to score Carda and tie the game up.

A double by Mysha Sataraka and another error in the Cal infield on a sac bunt moved Sataraka to third before Jessica Hall hit a sac fly to plate Sataraka for the go-ahead run.

Jones, senior Jordan Wallace and sophomore Vanessa Alvarez all had hits against Carda. The Bruin ace also struck out six and walked four. Freshman Stephanie Trzcinski pitched the full game for the Bears, allowing one earned run from seven hits while walking seven and fanning four.

The Bears return to action Thursday, Friday and Saturday against Pac-12 foe Utah in Salt Lake City. First pitch of the opening game is set for 5 p.m. on May 3.
