BERKELEY – No. 2 California women’s crew will meet with rival No. 7 Washington this Saturday, April 26, in Redwood Shores as the Bears look to capture the Simpson Cup for the 10th time in 11 years. The Simpson Cup is awarded annually to the winner of the varsity eight race between the Bears and the Huskies.

The schedule is set to begin at 9 a.m., with both the men’s and women’s teams competing against rival Washington. The women’s varsity eight race opens the day for the Bears, with the men’s varsity eight following at 9:10 a.m. The women’s second varsity eight race will take place at 9:20 a.m., with the men’s second varsity at 9:30 a.m. At 9:40 a.m. the women’s varsity four will race the Huskies, with the men’s varsity four getting their shot at 9:50 a.m. The women's novice eight is set to race at 10:00 a.m., and the men's freshman eight wrapping up the racing schedule at 10:10 a.m. The day will conclude with a trophy presentation at 11:15 a.m.

You can stay up to date with the scheduling and follow the action with live, in-race updates using the Golden Bears' official Twitter handle @CalWCrew.

The Simpson Cup trophy was donated in 2003 by longtime Husky Crew supporters Hunter and Dottie Simpson, whose daughter Anne (Class of ’78) rowed at Cal. The Simpson Cup replaces the Big Oar trophy that was retired in 2002 after 22 years.

Washington holds the all-time series lead for the Simpson Cup, 23-16, but Cal has won the nine of the last 10 races. The Bears have swept all four races against the Huskies in two of the past three seasons. Cal won the first six races in the series from 1975-80. The Bears were also victorious in 1990.

Last year, Cal and Washington split the four races with Bears winning the second varsity eight and varsity four, as the Huskies captured the Simpson Cup and the novice eight race.

Cal is coming off a first-place team finish in the Lake Natoma Invitational April 12-13 in Gold River. The varsity eight boat won its grand final on Sunday with a time of 6:23.00 to defeat top-ranked Brown (6:27.40) and No. 9 USC (6:32.30), as Cal claimed all three sessions through the weekend.

Following Saturday’s regatta, the Bears will spend another weekend at their home course, competing against Stanford in the Big Row on Saturday, May 3.
