BERKELEY – The nation’s top-two ranked men’s crew teams will clash this Saturday, April 26, when No. 1 California hosts No. 2 Washington in a battle for the 103rd Schoch Cup at Redwood Shores. The Schoch Cup is awarded annually to the winner of the varsity eight race between the Bears and the Huskies.

The Golden Bears’ varsity eight enters the regatta ranked No. 1 nationally in the latest USRowing Collegiate Poll released on Wednesday.

The schedule is set to begin at 9 a.m., with both the men’s and women’s teams competing against rival Washington. The women’s varsity eight race opens the day for the Bears, with the men’s varsity eight following at 9:10 a.m. The women’s second varsity eight race will take place at 9:20 a.m., with the men’s second varsity at 9:30 a.m. At 9:40 a.m. the women’s varsity four will race the Huskies, with the men’s varsity four getting their shot at 9:50 a.m. The women's novice eight is set to race at 10:00 a.m., and the men's freshman eight wrapping up the racing schedule at 10:10 a.m. The day will conclude with a trophy presentation at 11:15 a.m.

You can stay up to date with the scheduling and follow the action with live, in-race updates using the Golden Bears' official Twitter handle @CaliforniaCrew.

The men's varsity eight winner in the Cal-Washington rivalry takes home the Schoch Cup, named after Washington legend Delos Schoch, who lettered three years (1934-36) as a Husky oarsman. Washington leads the varsity series 71-30-1 and has won the last seven varsity eight duals.

The two rowing rivals met last year at the Montlake Cut in Seattle with Washington taking all four races over Cal, defeating the Bears, 5:43.6 to 5:48.6, in the varsity eight.

Cal is coming off a perfect weekend at the Stanford Invitational April 18-19 at Redwood Shores. The varsity eight boat defeated Wisconsin on Friday with a time of 6:13.0 compared to the Badgers' 6:35.4. On Saturday the varsity eight topped Oregon State by more than 20 seconds, finishing in 5:42.9 ahead of the Beavers 6:03.3.

Following Saturday’s regatta, the Bears will spend another weekend at their home course, competing against Stanford in the Big Row on Saturday, May 3.
