SACRAMENTO – The Cal sand volleyball team closed out the first season in school history on a high note Saturday, winning matches against San Jose State and Sac State at the Sacramento Softball Complex.
The Bears (5-6) defeated San Jose State 5-0 and Sac State 4-1.
Cal’s No. 2 team of sophomores Sarah Cole and Lara Vukasovic and No. 3 pairing of sophomore Nikki Gombar and Maddy Kerr didn’t drop a set all day, although Cole and Vukasovic were pushed hard by the Hornets’ Madeline Cannon and Sloan Lovett before prevailing 28-26, 21-19. Gombar and Kerr breezed to their two victories and finished the season having won seven of their final eight matches.
Seniors Adrienne Gehan and Joan Caloiaro, who make up Cal’s No. 1 team, finished their careers with a pair of victories as well. The duo was pushed to three sets by San Jose State before finally prevailing, 21-15, 19-21, 15-12 and then won in straight sets against the Hornets.
Most of the team also plays on the Bears’ indoor team, and the players will now get back into the gym to complete their spring workouts. After the spring semester concludes, the Bears will reconvene to prepare for their European tour. Cal will visit Switzerland, Italy, Slovenia and Croatia from May 24-June 7 and play matches against various club and nationally sponsored teams. The trip is being paid for exclusively through fundraising efforts.
