BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Though the 2014 Cal women’s gymnastics season ended two days earlier than the program had hoped, seniors Alicia Asturias and Dallas Crawford still capped off stellar careers in grand fashion at the 2014 NCAA Women’s Gymnastics Championships in Birmingam, Ala. While neither advanced to the individual event finals on Sunday, the duo was Cal’s first representation at the championship level since 1994.
The pair competed in Friday’s afternoon semifinal, where Asturias finished with a 39.150 as an individual all-arounder, finishing 56th on vault (9.80), 48th on bars (9.80), 40th on beam (9.80) and 77th on floor (9.75). Crawford finished 20th as a bars specialist with a 9.85.
Asturias finishes her career as one of the most decorated gymnasts in program history. This season alone, she was named NACGC West Region Gymnast of the Year, an All-Pac-12 First Team all-arounder, AAI Award finalist, Pac-12 Scholar Athlete of the Year and Pac-12 All-Academic First Team selection. Asturias became Cal’s first gymnast since My-Lan Dodd in 2003 to claim Pac-12 Gymnast of the Week honors. She claimed 12 event titles with 27 top-three finishes and matched the program-record 9.95 on vault for the second time in her career. After setting new career-high scores on every event in 2013, she topped each score this season, including an incredible 39.425 all-around.
Crawford punched her ticket to the NCAA Championships by claiming the NCAA Minneapolis Regional uneven bars title by matching her career-high 9.925. It was the second bars title Crawford claimed in 2014 on top of eight top-three finishes. She was also named a Pac-12 All-Academic honorable mention.
The top three teams from each of Friday’s two semifinals will advance to tomorrow’s Super Six, where the 2014 NCAA Women’s Gymnastics Champion will be crowned.
