DENVER - Gaby Christman scored twice for California, but the Golden Bears' women's lacrosse team lost to Denver, 12-5, Friday afternoon in Denver. The Golden Bears fell to 4-10 on the season and 2-5 in MPSF conference play.

"It was a great defensive effort," head coach Ginger Miles said. "We struggled with consistency on offense. Denver is a very good team, so I was happy with how hard our girls worked, but we need to keep working on executing our game plan."

In addition to the two goals from Christman, the Bears also got goals from Amelia Burke, Michaela Bird and Paige Gasparino. Bird and Bella Huther each notched an assist.

Defensively for the Bears, Katie Gutierrez garnered nine saves, while Marissa O'Meally registered four ground balls and three caused turnovers.  Burke and Jacqueline Pelletier also had three ground balls.

"Katie had a really standout day," Miles said. "She made some key, clutch saves down the stretch. She had eight saves in the first half."

Miles also praised the defensive efforts of Casey Reid and Grace Parente.

Denver had control throughout the game, including scoring the first five goals to start the day before Christman got the Bears on the board with her first goal. Burke later notched her tally with 30 seconds remaining in the half to cut Denver's lead to four at the break.

Denver scored the first three goals of the second half before Cal got back-to-back goals from Bird and Gasparino. Christman added her second goal with five minutes remaining in the game,

Cal has two games remaining in the regular season. The Bears will play at Colorado on Sunday, April 20, at 10:30 a.m. PT. Cal will then close out the regular season at Stanford on Thursday, April 24, at 4 p.m. That game will be broadcast live on the Pac-12 Networks.

"We're looking forward to our next opportunity to get back on the field against Colorado," Miles said. "We're confident in our team, and we have the ability to make the adjustments to be successful against Colorado."
