BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – California women’s gymnastics seniors Alicia Asturias and Dallas Crawford already made program history after clinching two berths to the 2014 NCAA Women’s Gymnastics Championships, but this weekend the duo will seek to further solidify a place in the record books with individual event titles in Birmingham, Ala. Championship competition is set for April 18-20 at the Birmingham Jefferson Convention Complex (BJCC).
Asturias qualified as an all-arounder after finishing third at the NCAA Minneapolis Regional on April 5, while Crawford qualified as an uneven bars specialist with her 9.925 title at the regional. Both gymnasts will compete in the Semifinal I session at 11 a.m. PT on Friday. The top four individuals on each event (including ties) will advance to the Individual Event Finals on Sunday at noon PT. The all-around title will be determined by the top score on Friday, but Asturias will also have a chance to compete for All-American status on the individual events on Sunday.
Prior to this season, Cal had never sent more than one gymnast to the NCAA Championships to compete as an individual, and only three Cal gymnasts have earned All-America status: Kristen Smyth (first team vault, second team floor and all-around), Mimi Goyer (second team balance beam) and Cindy Tom (second team balance beam). All three gymnasts were members of Cal's 1992 squad, the only squad in program history to advance to the NCAA Championships as a team. This is the Cal program’s ninth total appearance at the NCAA Championship level, with the last appearance in 2003 by all-arounder My-Lan Dodd.
