Cal Sends 12 to Mt. Sac Relays

12 Golden Bears will be in action this weekend in Walnut, Calif.

BERKELEY – The California Golden Bears track & field team will be sending a contingent of 12 to the Mt. Sac Relays on Friday, April 18 and Saturday April 19. The Bears are coming off of their first sweep of the Big Meet since 2000 this past weekend over Stanford. Of the 12 competitors, 11 are from the No. 23 men’s team, while redshirt senior Malaina Payton will be representing the women’s team in Walnut, Calif.

Friday’s competition for the Bears opens at roughly 10 a.m. PT with redshirt junior Scott Esparza in the men’s open hammer. Esparza climbed onto the All-Time Best Performances list at number five, with a PR throw of 209-1 last week at the Big Meet, winning the same event. Additionally, sophomore Jonte Grant will be participating in both the open triple jump (11:30 a.m.) and open long jump (2:00 p.m.).Grant finished second in both events with distances of 50-7.50 and 24-2.50 at the Big Meet. While the long jump competition is going on, three Bears are set to compete in the open 100-meters; redshirt seniors Tom Blocker, Dash Oliver and freshman Khalfani Muhammad. Blocker and Muhammad finished 1-2 in the same event last week, each matching season-bests with times of 10.48 and 10.60, respectively. Redshirt senior Derek White is also set to be in action in the invitational/open discus at 2:30 p.m. after placing himself seventh on the all-time performers list at the Big Meet following his win in the same event, setting a new PR with a throw of 194-11. Cal finishes their first day of the Mt. Sac Relays at 4 p.m. with a pair of competitors in the open high jump; senior Nick Ridge and sophomore Noel Frazier.

Day two begins at roughly 11 a.m. on Saturday with redshirt senior Hammed Suleman set to compete in the men’s elite invitational long jump. He won both the long jump and triple jump this past weekend at the Big Meet for the Bears, leaping a season-best distance of 25-0.50. On the women’s side, Payton is scheduled to participate in the elite invitational long jump around 1 p.m. Four Bears are also slated to compete in the men’s elite invitational 4x100-meter relay team of Oliver, Blocker, Muhammad and redshirt junior Dan Davis. Cal closes out the meet when sophomore Randy Bermea competes in the elite invitational 400-meter hurdles, an event he won last week with a time of 51.46.
