Teresa K. Gould, who joined the Golden Bear staff in the fall of 2001, serves as Cal’s Deputy Director of Athletics as well as the department’s Chief of Staff. Gould serves as Sandy Barbour's primary point of contact and decision making for cross-functional activities across the department.
The position is responsible for prioritizing departmental needs, coordinating and streamlining multi-functional decision making and ensuring that departmental resources align with stated goals.
Gould serves as the Director’s primary policy advisor and takes the lead in coordinating the work of the five-person Leadership Team and the implementation of the Director’s strategic agenda. Additionally, she will serve as the sports supervision lead, providing governance on policy, procedures and programming that will deliver consistent oversight and support of all of Cal's sports programs. She also coordinates and manages Cal Athletics' strategic plan, both its development and execution, as well as internal communications throughout the department.
Gould oversees the budgetary and operational needs of various intercollegiate varsity teams at Cal, including both men’s and women’s basketball, providing guidance and support to each program’s head coach. A member of various NCAA and Pacific-12 Conference committees, including the Pac-12 Council, Gould serves as the department’s liaison to the Pac-12 Networks.
Before moving to Berkeley in September of 2001, Gould served as Associate Commissioner of the West Coast Conference in San Bruno, Calif. In seven years with the WCC, she managed the league’s television, marketing and corporate sponsorship efforts, as well as administered conference championships and served as staff liaison to various coaches groups. She was a member of the NCAA Division I Management Council for two years during her tenure at the WCC.
From 1992-94, Gould worked for ESPN Regional Television in Charlotte, N.C., as Conference Relations Coordinator. In this role, she served as the liaison to several NCAA Division I conferences. In addition, Gould was Director of Championships and Media Relations for the Midwestern Collegiate Conference in Indianapolis from 1990-92, Public Relations/ Promotions Assistant for the Iowa Games Sports Festival (1989-90) and Assistant to the Coordinator of Football Recruiting at Iowa State (1987-90).
Gould received her bachelor’s degree in journalism and mass communications from Iowa State in 1990 and her master’s degree in education from Cal in 2009. She and her husband, UC Davis head football coach Ron Gould, reside in the East Bay, where they raise their sons, Tevin and Trae.
