DETROIT, Mich. - Behind four goals from true freshman Bella Huther and a hat trick from Brynn Gasparino, the California women's lacrosse team ended its' losing streak with an 11-10 tight victory over Detroit Thursday afternoon in Detroit.
After having lost multiple games by a close margin in recent weeks, the Golden Bears (3-8) were able to hold on and get the win this time.
"It's great, to be back in the win column," head coach Ginger Miles said. "It wasn’t necessarily our cleanest win, but like I told our players, sometimes you win pretty and sometimes you win ugly. Credit to our team for gutting this one out."
With her four goals on the day, Huther now has 34 on the season and she leads her team in that category. Her 34 points also tops the team list.
"Bella’s really tough to cover inside," Miles said. "We found a weakness in their defense and we exploited it."
Gasparino's third goal to complete the hat trick was the most important as it proved to be the gamewinner. Her other two goals came in the first half.
"Brynn gave us a great punch off the bench," Miles said. "She gave us two critical goals down the stretch. Brynn’s been working hard, and it’s nice to see her hard work pay off with goals."
Nicole Beck took over the team lead in assists with her personal-best five helpers on the day. Gaby Christman notched two goals, as well, contributing to the Cal scoring.
The Bears jumped on the Titans early, scoring three of the first four goals in the first 10 minutes of play. In the first half, Cal held two-goal leads on two separate occasions, but Detroit battled back to tie it both times. The teams went into halftime tied at six.
Similar to the first half, Cal came out of the gate scoring three of the first four goals in the first 13 minutes of the second half. Also similar to the first half, the Titans came back to tie the game.
Huther scored her fourth goal of the day at the 6:43 mark before Detroit tied it one minute later. Gasparino then netted the eventual gamewinner with four minutes remaining in regulation.
Katie Gutierrez made her first career start at goalie for the Bears, and made eight saves in garnering the win.
Cal remains in the state of Michigan this week. The Bears will clash with Michigan on Saturday, April 12, at 10 a.m. PT from Ann Arbor.
