San Diego – The California men’s crew team opened the season on Saturday in the San Diego Crew Classic on Mission Bay in San Diego.
All five Cal boats advanced to the finals on Sunday, with the Bears claiming first in four of the races.
Cal’s varsity eight raced down the 2,000-meter course in 5:52.25 to defeat Syracuse (6:07.25) and British Columbia (6:08.55) in its Copley Cup heat race.
The Bears had two boats in the Second Varsity, taking first in the A heat and second in the B heat. The first Cal boat made it down the course in 5:48.26, while the Bears' second boat posted a time of 6:09.41.
Cal also finished first in the Men’s Collegiate Novice 8+ with a time of 6:01.13 to defeat UCSB (6:17.51) and Notre Dame (6:18.43).
In the final race of the day for the Bears, Cal's open eight won its heat with a time of 6:07.69.
