TEMPE, Ariz. – California sophomore Carly Childs matched her career-best 18-hole score and the Golden Bears had their strongest round as a team this spring to sit sixth after the first day of competition in a loaded field at the PING/ASU Invitational held at the ASU Karsten Golf Course.

The Golden Bears shot a 291 (+3) Friday, matching the second-lowest 18-hole team round this season that was surpassed only by the third-round 286 that the team shot in the season-opening Ptarmigan Classic. The 291 is the lowest single-round score this spring by the Bears as the team sits tied with No. 2 UCLA and No. 30 Oregon on the team leaderboard.

No. 11 Washington sits atop the team leaderboard with a 284 (-4).

Childs, who sits sixth individually after 18 holes, put together her best round of the spring with a 2-under 70 after scoring birdies on the 2nd, 5th, 14th and 15th holes Friday. The score matches her collegiate best which was also set at the Ptarmigan Classic this year as well as at the Spartan Invitational last spring.

Sophomore Hannah Suh shot a 1-under 71 to sit tied for 12th on the individual leaderboard. With rounds under par Friday, Suh and Childs are both tied with senior Nicola Rössler with five rounds under par this season.

Rössler shot a 75 (+3) with a near perfect front 9 followed by three birdies in the first five holes of the back 9. However, a double-bogey on the par-3 12th followed by three consecutive bogeys to end the day pushed the senior to a 75. She and teammate Jo Ee Kok both sit tied for 40th individually after one round after Kok also carded a 75 Friday.

Junior Morgan Thompson made her return to the lineup for the first time since February 16 and carded an 81 (+9).

Competition resumes Saturday with tee times beginning at 8 a.m.
