BERKELEY – California’s Gregory Bayane claimed his second Pac-12 Player of the Week honor this week, the conference office announced on Tuesday. A junior, Bayane earned his latest accolade for contributing to the Golden Bears’ victory in their Pac-12 opener at Arizona, 4-0, and in their win at Utah, 4-2.

"Greg's play has been pivotal in our team's success this season,” Cal head coach Peter Wright said. “His focus and intensity inspire his teammates in matches, and he has tremendously high expectations for himself and the team."

Bayane and doubles partner Chase Melton – who are ranked 14th in the latest ITA poll – improved their overall record to 16-2 and their dual-match record to 6-0 with an 8-3 win over the Wildcats’ Naoki Takeda and Sumeet Shinde on March 28. Bayane also improved his singles record to 16-2 with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Trevor James in Tucson, Ariz. The duo of Bayane and sophomore Wyatt Houghton fell in a tight, 8-6, doubles match in Cal’s 4-2 victory on March 30 at No. 52 Utah. The Meaux, France, native’s singles match against the Utes’ Devin Laine went unfinished.

The Bear - who has garnered both of Cal's Pac-12 honors this season - also claimed the weekly conference award on Jan. 28 after Bayane won both his singles and both his doubles matches in the ITA Kick-Off Weekend. Cal’s wins that weekend – over No. 33 Alabama, 4-2, and against host and No. 12 Pepperdine, 4-2 – qualified the Bears for the ITA National Men’s Team Indoor Championships.

The Cal tennis programs swept this week’s conference honors, as sophomore Klara Fabikova earned the Pac-12 Women’s Player of the Week award.

The 18th-ranked Cal men continue the conference schedule when they play at No. 3 and 2013 NCAA runner-up UCLA on Friday at 1:30 p.m. and then take on No. 2 USC – which won the 2009-12 NCAA titles – on Saturday at 1 p.m. in Los Angeles.
