Showdown Against UCLA Highlights Final Homestand

BERKELEY – The No. 4 Cal women’s water polo team closes out its home schedule this week, beginning with a pivotal showdown against No. 2 UCLA on Thursday on the Pac-12 Networks. The Bears and Bruins met once earlier this season at the Stanford Invitational, with UCLA defeating Cal 10-9 in overtime. Saturday will be Senior Day, as the Bears will honor lone senior Ashley Young before their nonconference game against Cal State Northridge.

Bears To Appear On Pac-12 Networks
Cal will make its second appearance this seaosn on the Pac-12 Networks on Thursday against No. 2 UCLA at 1:30 p.m. Jason Knapp will handle the play-by-play duties while Chris Dorst will provide the analysis. The Bears made their season-debut on the Pac-12 Networks earlier this month at USC. Cal has one more televised game remaining, its regular-season finale at Stanford on April 19 at 5 p.m.

Freshmen Lead The Way
The majority of the Bears’ offensive production this season is coming from freshmen, as their top three scorers are all first-year players, and they each rank among the top-15 in the MPSF. Dora Antal paces the MPSF with a 3.29 goal average (56 overall) while Roser Tarrago is sixth in the conference at 2.36 goals per game. Anna Illes, who is second on the team in goals with 36, is tied for 14th in the MPSF in goal average at 1.80. Illes has been Cal’s leader or co-leader in goals scored in four of the past five matches. Overall, the trio has accounted for 48 percent of the Bears’ scoring this season, and 57 percent have come from the entire freshmen class.

Last Time Out
The Bears got four goals each from Dora Antal and Anna Illes to defeat CSU Bakersfield 19-10 at Spieker Aquatics Complex. Antal, returning from a three-game absence due to injury, scored all of her goals during an 8-0 run that put Cal in command.

• The Bruins’ only losses are to No. 1 USC and No. 3 Stanford. UCLA lost to Stanford in the championhip match of the Stanford Invitational but came back to beat the Cardinal during the UC Irvine Tournament.
• Sophomore Rachel Fattal was nominated for the Sullivan Award, given to the nation’s top amateur athlete

• The Matadors have won a school-record 11 straight games. Their last loss came in overtime to UC Irvine on Feb. 23
• CSUN is led by junior Marisa Young’s 52 goals scored this season. Senior Lindsy Duncan has netted 41 goals.
