SAN LUIS OBISPO, CALIF. – Cal sophomore first baseman Nick Halamandaris was 3-for-4 with a double and home run, and junior shortstop Derek Campbell hit his fourth home run of the year, but the Golden Bears were still topped by No. 6-ranked Cal Poly (19-4), 8-4, Sunday afternoon (March 23) in San Luis Obispo. The Mustangs own a 2-1 lead in the four-game series after defeating Cal, 4-1, on Friday. The Bears (11-11) came back to defeat Cal Poly, 8-3, Saturday night.
The final game of the series is Monday, March 24 at 3 p.m. at Baggett Stadium.
Cal scored the first run of the game in the second inning when Halamandaris led-off with a double to left center field off of Mustang right-hander Casey Bloomquist (5-0, 7.1 innings, nine hits, four runs, four strikeouts) and later scored on an RBI single from junior second baseman Brenden Farney.
Cal Poly came back to take control of the game with four runs in the bottom of the second inning off of Cal junior left-hander Michael Theofanopoulos (1-4, 1.2 innings, six hits, four runs, three earned runs, one walk, two strikeouts).
The Bears were able to score two runs in the fourth inning to get within, 4-3, when Halamandaris had a one-out single and then scored on Campbell’s two-run homer to left field.
Unfortunately for Cal, Cal Poly exploded for three runs in the sixth inning off of Bear reliever Ryan Mason. Cal got a run back when Halamandaris homered to right field in the top of the eighth inning, but the Mustangs added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth for the final 8-4 margin.
After the series versus Cal Poly, the Bears return to Pac-12 play with a three-game series versus Utah, March 28-30 at Evans Diamond, followed by a non-conference game versus Stanford on April 1 at 7 p.m. at Evans Diamond.
