BOULDER, Colo. – Zsofi Susanyi lost just one game en route to winning her singles match and securing No. 16 California’s 7-0 victory over No. 64 Colorado on Sunday indoors at the Rocky Mountain Tennis Center. Susanyi, a junior ranked 13th in singles, beat the Buffaloes’ Carla Manzi Tenorio, 6-1, 6-0, on court three.

With their fourth consecutive win, the Golden Bears improved their record to 10-4 (3-0 in the Pac-12). Colorado fell to 7-9 (0-5 Pac-12).

The teams played indoors due to inclement weather in the Boulder area.

Cal clinched the doubles point when the team of senior Kelly Chui and sophomore Klara Fabikova beat CU’s Dhany Quevedo/Vitaliya Alkhovik, 8-2, on court three. Freshmen Maegan Manasse and Denise Starr got the first win with an 8-4 result over Julyette Steur/Ashley Tiefel on court one.

The Bears did not lose a set on the day, as Cal quickly clinched the overall match in singles. Starr, ranked 26th, beat Steur, 6-1, 6-3, on court one, Schutting, ranked 30th, defeated Winde Janssens, 7-5, 6-2, on court two and Susanyi posted her victory to make the overall score 4-0.

The teams played out the rest of the matches, with Fabikova beating Tiefel, 6-1, 6-2, on court four, Manasse, ranked 108th, surpassing Quevedo, 6-0, 6-3, on court five and senior Alice Duranteau defeating Alkhovik, 6-2, 6-3, on court six.

“It was a good win,” Cal head coach Amanda Augustus said. “We’re on the road and had to go from outdoors to indoors. Unfortunately Lynn (Chi) wasn’t able to play today, but it was an opportunity for Alice to step in, and she did a great job. It shows our team is getting mentally tougher as the season goes on as well as playing better. I’m really pleased with the doubles play. We moved some things around, with Maegan and Denise on court one, Alice playing with Anett on court two today. With all the work we’ve put into doubles, everyone is prepared and ready to go.”

Starr bounced back in singles against the Buffs after dropping her court-one match at Utah.

“Denise played quite well today and in doubles as well,” Augustus said. “She got her focus and intensity back today. She hit the ball a lot cleaner. It was a good match. I was happy to see her compete really hard in singles and doubles and get back on track playing at the top position today.”

This marked the second match in three days – including Cal’s 6-1 win at Utah on March 21 – that Cal played at high altitude. The University of Utah’s elevation is 4,657 feet; Colorado’s is 5,430 feet. But the altitude hasn’t been a factor for the Bears, who won at the newest Pac-12 schools by the same scores in 2012.

“The girls on our team are in good shape, so I think it’s not terribly difficult of an adjustment,” Augustus added. “It’s a little bit of an adjustment – you can’t use all the shots you use down at sea-level – but the girls handled it really well. We prepared for it.”

Cal returns home to host Arizona State on Friday, March 28, and Arizona on Saturday, March 29, at the Hellman Tennis Complex.
