SAN LUIS OBISPO - Cal senior Vince Bruno tied the game, 1-1, with a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning, but No. 7-ranked Cal Poly came back with two runs in the bottom of the sixth on the way to a 4-1 victory over the Golden Bears Friday night (March 21) in San Luis Obispo.

The Mustangs improved their record to 18-3, while Cal dropped to 10-10 overall.

Sophomore center fielder Devin Pearson was hit by a pitch to lead off the top of sixth by Cal Poly left-hander Matt Imhof (5-1, 7.2 innings, three hits, one run, four walks, nine strikeouts). Pearson advanced to second base on a wild pitch and was sacrificed to third base by Brian Celsi. Bruno then plated Pearson with a fly ball to center field.

The losing pitcher for the Bears was freshman right-hander Daulton Jefferies (2-2), who threw 5.1 innings with six hits, two runs, two walks and four strikeouts. Unfortunately for Cal, after Bruno had tied the contest, Jefferies yielded a lead-off triple to Cal Poly's Jamie Allen to start the bottom of the sixth inning and Cal reliever Keaton Siomkin gave up two RBI singles to the Mustangs.

Cal Poly added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Bruno also added a single during the evening and senior first baseman Devon Rodriguez and junior right fielder Derek Campbell doubled for the Bears.

Cal will next battle Cal Poly in the second game of the four-game series, Saturday, March 22 at 6 p.m. at Baggett Stadium.
