BERKELEY -- Cal plays the last of its non-conference tournaments this weekend, heading to Santa Clara for the Marriott Round Robin beginning Friday, March 21. Cal will play Grand Canyon again at 6 p.m., followed by Princeton at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 22. The Golden Bears finish up their weekend on March 23 with Princeton at 10 a.m. and Santa Clara at 3 p.m.

SCOUTING GRAND CANYON
Grand Canyon is 11-12, with three losses coming against ranked teams in No. 24 Arizona twice and No. 4 Alabama. The Antelopes are 1-3 against Pac-12 opponents in 2014, defeating Oregon State 3-0 earlier this month. Kelsey Barak leads with a .347 batting average, including four doubles and four home runs for 14 RBI, while Grand Canyon is batting .275 as a team. Kailey Regester (5-2, 3.26 ERA) and Stephani Pesqueira (4-6, 3.90 ERA) split a majority of the work in the circle, combining for 46 strikeouts, 129 hits and 69 earned runs.
Princeton has played only 15 games due to six game cancellations and now has a 4-11 record. The Tigers are batting .219 with Emily Viggers at the top with a .296 average in 10 starts. Alyscca Schmidt has a team-leading seven RBI and five runs, and Rachel Rendina also have five runs. Shanna Christian has earned seven starts in the circle with a 2-4 record and 4.79 ERA, while Erica Nori (2-2) owns the most complete games (3) of the Princeton pitching staff as well as an impressive 1.17 ERA in 30 innings pitched.
SCOUTING SANTA CLARA
The Broncos are 4-16 with a 1-7 home record after struggling in the circle with a team ERA of 4.98. Ciara Gonzales (1-6, 3.95 ERA) and Jessica Turner (2-6, 4.70 ERA) have done most of the work for Santa Clara, combining for 13 starts with 31 strikeouts and 92 innings pitched. Offensively, Kelly Scribner sits atop the leaderboard with a .345 batting average including seven doubles and two home runs plus a team-high nine runs scored. Geenamarie Bonilla has driven in 13 runs this season, but the Broncos have only scored 61 runs total.
LAST TIME OUT
Cal took two from Grand Canyon in Bear Territory, winning both games in a doubleheader 5-4 and 7-1. Breana Kostreba hit a walk-off home run at the bottom of the seventh with the Bears down 4-3 in game one, while Stephanie Trzcinski tossed a career-high seven strikeouts in game two to lead the Bears to victory.
WHO TO WATCH THIS WEEKEND
Cal’s team batting average has slowly improved in the last week, with the Bears putting up a .283 total for the season. Of the team’s regular starters, Cheyenne Cordes paces the Bears with a .429 average in 21 starts plus 16 RBI. Danielle Henderson (.346) leads in homers (9) and RBI (24), while Breana Kostreba and Victoria Jones have contributed 14 RBI each. Stephanie Trzcinski has lowered her ERA drastically with three wins in the last week for a 3-3 record with a 3.0 ERA. She’s given up 39 hits and 17 earned runs while fanning 29 battrs in 39.2 innings pitched. Nisa Ontiveros has seen time in 16 games, allowing 33 earned runs and 19 walks with 38 strikeouts in 70 innings pitched for a 3.30 ERA and 8-5 record.
Cal hosts Sacramento State at Levine-Fricke Field on Wednesday, March 26 before the Bears’ conference schedule gets into full swing next weekend. The team will head to Oregon State for their second Pac-12 series of the season. Cal will play in Corvallis starting Friday, March 28, with 1 p.m. games on the 28th and 29th and a noon game on Sunday, March 30.
