BERKELEY – Two California Golden Bears were in action on day one of the 18th Annual California Multis at Edwards Stadium in Berkeley on Thursday. Junior Jaci Powell is in second place after the first day of competition in the heptathlon with 3,059 points, while senior Andrew Cruikshank is third in the decathlon with 3,336 points.
"Jaci had an encouraging first day as her total is on pace for a career best," Director of track & field Tony Sandoval said. "Her 100 Hurdles was faster late last year, but I see her significantly under 14 flat as she recently converted from the indoor 60 hurdles. The high jump is a work in progress and the achillis heel for her. It's a big point-getter with every inch and if she can nail that technique it can get her to the NCAA's."
Powell won the 200-meters with a time of 25.01, placed second in the 100-meter hurdles with a 14.63 and placed third in both the high jump as well as the shot put. The Oakdale, Calif. native set a new PR in the shot, posting a mark of 36-3.25 (11.13m), eclipsing her previous best of 36-0.25 which was set indoors at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships in 2013. Powell and the rest of the field will compete in the long jump, javelin throw and 800-meters on Friday.
"The long jump and javelin are her better events tomorrow, so I see her coming on strong," Sandoval added. "Regardless, the goal for her is an NCAA's qualifying mark later at the Pac-12's."
Cruikshank placed third in the shot put with a mark of 41-4.25 (12.60m) as well as the long jump, with a leap of 20-3.75 (6.19m) which is a new PR. Additionally, the Santa Ana, Calif. native finished fifth in the high jump, clearing a height of 5-9.25 (1.76m) and was sixth in the 400-meters with a time of 51.61. Cruikshank also placed eighth in the 100-meters, clocking an 11.61.
In all, six heptathletes are in the field, led by BYU’s Nicole Laws, while there are 12 competitors in the decathlon, which is led currently by BYU’s Joshua Weirich.
In addition to Powell and Cruikshank at the Cal Multis, more members of the Cal track & field team will be competing on Saturday at the Hornet Invitational on the campus of Sacramento State University in the state capital.
