Paige Gasparino notched five points on four goals and an assist, but it wasn't enough for California, as No. 18 Towson defeated the Golden Bears, 19-11, Thursday afternoon at Kabam Field at Memorial Stadium.
The Bears (2-3) had two other scorers find the back of the net multiple times, as Bella Huther and Gaby Christman had two goals each. Christman also notched an assist. In addition, Nicole Beck chipped in three points with a goal and two assists. Gasparino and Christman tallied nine and eight shots, respectively, and Gasparino converted on both of her free-position attempts.
Towson got off to a hot start with three goals in the first five minutes of the contest. The Tigers went on to notch seven of the first eight goals of the first half to take control of the game. Caroline Schlegel scored with 13 seconds left in the half to cut Towson's lead to 13-5 at the break. Schlegel led all players with five draw controls, as well.
Cal and Towson scored six goals each in the second half, but the Tigers scored three of the first four to continue its stranglehold of the game. Towson held an 11-goal lead with seven minutes left before the Bears went on to score the final three goals of the day, including two from Gasparino.
The Bears will trek to the East Coast for their next three games. First up on the road trip is a meeting with La Salle on Monday, March 24, at 4 p.m. PT. Cal returns to Kabam Field at Memorial Stadium on Thursday, April 6, vs. Oregon at 7 p.m. There will be no live video on CalBears.com for that game because it will be broadcast on the Pac-12 Networks.
