BERKELEY  - The No. 9 California Golden Bears defeated the Washington Huskies on Senior Night at Haas Pavilion Saturday night in Berkeley by a score of 428.550-380.400. Cal sent off redshirt seniors Donothan Bailey, who finished with an all-around score of 87.900, Jeffrey Langenstein and Christian Monteclaro with a win in their final meet at Berkeley. Former Golden Bear Matthew Del Junco was also honored after the meet during the senior festivities. In addition, the 19th-ranked California women’s team defeated the UC Davis Aggies by a score of 195.675-194.950

“Tonight was a very fun event,” said Associate Head Coach Brett McClure following the meet on Saturday. “Coed is always really exciting, just to see the women’s team who we work out with every day on the same competition floor was fun. The guys really did a great job on floor and went five-for-five and did a great job on horse, going four-for-five. After that we had some uncharacteristic mistakes on rings, vault and parallel bars, which we hadn’t really seen that much this year. Hopefully we got that out of our system leading into the postseason. Overall though, I thought the guys did great and I feel confident that we are going to peak at the right time.”

The Golden Bears won each event this week against Washington, and came out flying, posting a school-record on the floor exercise with a team score of 74.850. Sophomore Kyle Zemeir got things started off right for the Bears, posting a routine that garnered a 15.000. Bailey and Langenstein followed suit, scoring a 15.000 and 15.300, respectively. Cal hit on all five routines in their lineup, scoring no lower than 14.750.

California followed up their stellar first rotation with a total score of 70.000 on the pommel horse, and the team was led by Bailey’s fantastic routine that earned a 15.000. Redshirt freshman Tanner Dowell also impressed, coming close to his all-time best, scoring a 14.100.

Sophomore Kyle Zemeir paced the Bears on the still rings, earning a score of 14.900 just shy of his career-best of 14.950. Langenstein was also strong, performing a routine that earned him a score of 14.700.

The Bears scored a total team score of 73.000 on vault and were led by sophomore Ryan Patterson’s 15.100, which tied his career best set at Ohio State on Feb. 14. Zemeir, Langenstein and Bailey rounded out the rotation with scores of 14.550, 14.500 and 14.400, respectively to lead the Golden Bears to another event title.

Cal struggled a bit on the parallel bars, scoring a 69.100, their second lowest total on the season on that apparatus. Bailey paced the team with a 14.300, but as McClure mentioned, there were some uncharacteristic mistakes.

Bailey closed out the competition in style, sticking his landing on the high bar, garnering a score of 15.300 in his last event at Haas Pavilion. The redshirt senior was mobbed by teammates on the floor, putting an emphatic punctuation mark on his home career. Zemeir was also solid, adding a routine of 14.450 to boost the Bears to their total team score of 428.550.

“The seniors have been tremendous,” McClure added in reference to the senior recognition tonight at Haas. “Right from my first day here, they really took control of the team and set us off into a new direction and a new culture. They led the way and I am so thankful for everything they have done for this program and want to continue to do so. They have talked openly about supporting us for as long as they can later on down the road and we will be forever grateful for that.”

California is off next week in preparation for the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) Championships in Norman, Okla. on Saturday, March 29.
