Cal (No. T2 Golf World/Nike Golf, No. 3 Golfstat, No. 3 Golfweek/Sagarin) travels to the Tucson area for the second of three times this spring to play Friday-Sunday, March 14-16 at the National Invitational Tournament. The event hosted by Arizona is played at the par-72, 7,094-yard Catalina Course at the Omni Tucson National Resort. High temperatures for the event are forecast in the mid to upper 70’s with winds in the 15-20 mph range. The 14 teams in the field for the 54-hole event will play 18 holes for each of the event’s three consecutive days with tee times from the first and 10th holes starting each of the first two rounds at 8 am PDT/MST, with the final round a shotgun start with the same starting time. Each club will field five players with the top four scores each day counting towards the team’s total.   • Winners – Cal has won five of its first eight events in 2013-14 and 23 of its last 34 stroke-play tournaments overall dating back to the beginning of 2011-12
  • Top-Five Streak Snapped – Cal had finished in the top five for 34 consecutive stroke-play tournaments and 38 overall, including four additional match-play events, before finishing eighth in its most recent event at the Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters. The field for the event included the nation’s top six teams, seven of the top 10 and all 15 in the top 50 according to Golfweek.
  • Moving Up In The Polls – Despite the eighth-place finish at the Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters, the Golden Bears moved up one spot to No. 3 in both the latest Golfstat and Golfweek/Sagarin rankings released following the event. Cal remains tied for No. 2 in the most recent Golf World/Nike Golf poll released February 26.
  • NIT Experience – Michael Weaver is the lone Cal player to have previously played in the National Invitational Tournament. He played in the event during his 2009-10 true freshman season the last time Cal was in the field. Brandon Hagy was also a 2009-10 true freshman but did not participate. Cal finished fifth, while Weaver tied for 24th.
  • Kilpatrick Coming On – Keelan Kilpatrick was Cal’s top finisher at the Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters, tying for 12th place after the highest finish of his collegiate career in his previous event at the John A. Burns Intercollegiate when he tied for eighth. Kilpatrick, who had played just once previously since the spring of 2012, will be in the team’s No. 1 spot for the National Invitational Tournament.
  • Ban and Yoon Also Playing at NIT – James Yoon is in the team’s lineup for only the second time this season at the NIT, while Shotaro Ban will play as an individual in his first action since participating in the team’s first three fall events.

1. Keelan Kilpatrick (5-9, 165, So., 1L, Christchurch, New Zealand/St. Bede’s College)

  • In the lineup for the third consecutive tournament after having played only once previously since the spring of 2012, redshirting in 2012-13 and participating only at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational in the fall of 2013
  • Coming off the top finish of his career when he tied for eighth at the John A. Burns Intercollegiate and was Cal’s top finisher when he tied for 12th at the Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters in the team’s last two events

2. Joel Staler (5-7, 155, Sr., 3L, Amneville, France/INDP HS)

  • Has been individual medalist twice and in the top five four times over his last five events, sharing the Arizona Intercollegiate crown with Brandon Hagy and winning outright at the Alistair MacKenzie Invitational, while also tying for second at the John A. Burns Intercollegiate and tying for fifth at the Isleworth Collegiate Invitational
  • Won Pac-12 Men’s Golfer of the Month honors in February of 2014 for the second time in his career after posting a 69.80 stroke average over his first five rounds of the spring
  • Has been an individual medalist a team-high four times in his career, adding wins in 2012-13 at the Arizona Intercollegiate (shared with Michael Kim) and John A. Burns Intercollegiate to his two victories this season
  • Ben Hogan Award watch list and Byron Nelson Award nominee

3. Brandon Hagy (5-11, 170, Sr., 3L, Westlake Village, CA/Westlake HS)

  • Finished in the top 10 eight straight times including his first six events of 2013-14 before finishing out of the top 10 in each of his last two tournaments
  • Has been an individual medalist twice in 2013-14 (Jack Nicklaus Invitational, Arizona Intercollegiate) and three times in his career, also winning  the Alister MacKenzie Invitational in 2012-13
  • Listed at No. 3 on both the latest versions of the Haskins Award Watch List and Palmer Cup Ranking (Team USA), while he is also on the Ben Hogan Award watch list and a nominee for the Byron Nelson Award
  • One of two Cal players along with Pace Johnson to play in all eight of the team’s events in 2013-14

4. James Yoon (6-0, 180, So., 1L, Bradenton, FL/IMG Academy)

  • In the lineup for the second time in 2013-14 with previous showing a tied for 17th place finish at the Arizona Intercollegiate to open the spring schedule
  • Played in five spring events during the 2012-13 season, registering a 73.19 stroke average and a top finish of tied for seventh at the Western Intercollegiate as he earned Cal’s Freshman of the Year honors

5. Michael Weaver (5-9, 175, Sr., 3L, Fresno, CA/Clovis West HS)

  • Has three top-10 finishes and been tied for 17th or better in six of eight events in 2013-14
  • Ben Hogan Award watch list and a nominee for the Byron Nelson Trophy
  • The only Cal golfer to ever play at the Masters while currently on the collegiate team and only the second golfer in the history of the sport to play in the Masters, Palmer Cup, U.S. Open and Walker Cup in the same calendar year in 2013

Ind. Shotaro Ban (5-10, 155, So., 1L, San Jose, CA/Archbishop Misty HS)

  • Playing for the first time since participating in the team’s first three events of 2013-14 and registering a 72.44 stroke average, finishing sixth (Jack Nicklaus Invitational), tied for 12th (Saint Mary’s Invitational) and tied for 27th (Gopher Invitational)
