DAVIS, Calif. - The California women's lacrosse team couldn't maintain its four-goal lead as UC Davis came back in the second half to beat the Golden Bears, 8-7, Saturday afternoon in Davis, Calif. Senior Paige Gasparino notched two goals for Cal in the loss.
With the loss, the Bears fell to 1-2 overall and in conference play, while the Aggies remained unbeaten on the year at 3-0.
The game was really a tale of two halves, as Cal scored five of the seven first-half goals and UC Davis notched six of the eight in the second half. .
Amelia Burke, Gasparino, Caroline Schlegel, Nicole Beck and Bella Huther tallied the five first-half goals for the Bears. Cal held a 5-1 lead before the Aggies netted their second goal on a free-position shot with 18 seconds left in the first half.
After the break, Gaby Christman scored to give the Bears a four-goal lead again at 6-2. Cal went scoreless until the 6:41 mark, and during that span, the Aggies scored five consecutive goals to take a 7-6 lead.
Gasparino notched her second goal to tie the game again at 7 at the 6:41 mark.
With two minutes left in regulation, Gasparino got a yellow card to put the Bears down a player for the remainder of the half. UC Davis scored the eventual gamewinner on a free-position shot with 17 seconds remaining.
The Bears will get to play the next two games at Kabam Field at Memorial Stadium, as Cal welcomes Sienna next on Wed., March 12, at noon.
