BERKELEY – One of the traditionally more successful California programs in the classroom, the Golden Bear men’s tennis program has collected more academic accolades this season, including Gregory Bayane’s Academic Student-Athlete of the Week from the “Inside the Locker Room” radio show and Campbell Johnson’s Athletic Study Center Student-Athlete of the Month award.
The Cal men along with the Cal women’s tennis team will also be honored for their academic prowess during the Cal men’s basketball game vs. Utah on Wednesday at Haas Pavilion.
Bayane, a junior, has compiled a 3.678 GPA, which is the second-highest GPA on the men’s tennis team. Last year, the economics major earned Pac-12 All-Academic first-team honors for his performance in the classroom. On the court this year, he has a 10-8 singles record and, with teammate Chase Melton, has a 12-2 doubles record for the ninth-ranked Golden Bears.
A senior sociology major, Johnson was one of four Cal student-athletes to claim an Athletic Study Center honor for the month of October. He has a 15-6 singles record and a 3-6 doubles mark so far this season.
