WALNUT CREEK, Calif. – Senior Joël Stalter was named the Pac-12 Men’s Golfer of the Month for February the conference announced Monday. Stalter won the honor for the second time in his career adding to his selection in February of 2013.

Stalter also became the ninth Cal player to win the last 10 times the honor has been awarded dating back to April of 2012. Last season, Cal became the first team to sweep Pac-12 Men’s Golfer of the Month honors when Max Homa and Michael Kim won twice each in addition to Stalter.

Stalter continued his strong senior season by leading Cal to victories in its first two events of the spring at the Arizona Intercollegiate and John A. Burns Intercollegiate as he shared individual medalist honors and placed second, respectively. Stalter registered a 69.80 stroke average and was under par in four of his five rounds during the two events. The John A. Burns Intercollegiate was shortened to 36 holes due to inclement weather, denying Stalter the opportunity for a final round similar to what he accomplished at the Arizona Intercollegiate when he rallied from nine strokes down after two rounds for a share of individual medalist honors with teammate Brandon Hagy.

The beginning of his spring season follows a fall slate that Stalter finished with a victory at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational and a tie for fifth-place finish at the prestigious Isleworth Collegiate Invitational in his last two events. All told, he has won two of his last four events, finished first or second three times and been in the top four in all five.

Cal has won five of its first seven events in 2013-14 after being victorious in 12 of 14 stroke-play events last season and finishing the season ranked No. 1 despite being defeated by Illinois in an NCAA semifinal match. Cal has won 23 of its last 35 stroke-play events overall dating back to the start of the 2011-12 campaign and finished in the top five in all 35.

Cal returns to action March 7-9 at the Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters hosted by UNLV in Las Vegas. The Bears are the defending champion of the event.  Cal shares the No. ranking in the nation in the latest Golf World/Nike Golf Division I Coaches Pool, while Golfstat ranks the Bears third and Golfweek fourth.
