LA JOLLA, Calif. – California’s team of Filip Bergevi and Mads Engsted won twice at the Pacific Coast Doubles Championships on Saturday to advance to the round of 32 at the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club. With rain affecting the San Diego area off and on this weekend, the Golden Bears were still able to complete matches in the round of 128 and the round of 64, while the ninth-seeded Cal duo of Ben McLachlan and Andre Goransson won its round of 128 match.

Engsted, a sophomore, and Bergevi, a freshman, upset the fourth-seeded team of Eddie Acuna and Christopher Topham, 8-1, in the opening round. The Bears then topped Michael-John Every/Robero Livi Belloso, 8-4, in the round of 64.

Also in the opening round, McLachlan, a senior, and Goransson, a freshman, defeated Max Mereles/Guilherme Hadlich, 8-4, to reach the round of 64.

Rain forced the postponement of much of Friday’s action in the doubles tournament and forced a late start to Saturday’s action. Faced with more inclement weather late Saturday, tournament officials suspended play early.

As a result, several matches were moved from Saturday to Sunday. Those included the contest between seventh-seeded Cal juniors Gregory Bayane and Chase Melton and Stanford’s Fawaz Hourani/Walker Kehrer and the match featuring Cal sophomore Wyatt Houghton and junior Nikhil Jayashankar and Rice’s Max Andrews/Adam Gustafsson; both are slated to start at 8 a.m. on Sunday.

At 9 a.m. on Sunday, McLachlan/Goransson will play San Diego’s Ciaran Fitzgerald/Andrew Raphaelson and Bergevi/Engsted will play Rice’s Thomas Bennett/David Warren at 9 a.m.

The revised schedule for Sunday – the last day of the Pacific Coast Doubles Championships – is available on the tournament website.
