BERKELEY – Incoming freshman Ashten Smith-Gooden has been named a “Fab 50” selection by Volleyball Magazine.
The list, which was released Wednesday, is the magazine’s picks for the top 50 high school volleyball players in the country.
Smith-Gooden also earned High School All-American honorable mention by the publication.
Smith-Gooden was a 2013 Under Armour First Team All-American and rated as the nation’s No. 5 Senior Ace by PrepVolleyball.com. She is a two-time All-CIF Southern Section selection from Los Osos High School in Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.
Smith-Gooden is the highest-ranked recruit to sign with Cal since Tarah Murrey signed as the nation’s No. 2 prospect in 2007.
The Bears, who went 18-13 and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament last season, play their first spring tournament Saturday at Pacific. Cal will take on UOP, Sacramento State and Saint Mary’s.
Later this spring, the Bears are taking an international trip to Switzerland, Italy, Slovenia and Croatia. Under NCAA rules, teams are permitted to take a foreign tour once every four years. This will be the first international trip the program has taken during coach Rich Feller’s 15 years at the helm.
The Bears will leave the Bay Area on May 24 and return June 7, and play various club and nationally sponsored teams. The trip is being paid for exclusively through fundraising efforts.
