UC Irvine Tournament

BERKELEY – The No. 4 Cal women’s water polo team will measure up against the best teams in the country this weekend when it travels to Orange County for the UC Irvine Tournament. Annually the most competitive tournament in the nation, this year’s field features 14 teams (out of 16) ranked in this week’s CWPA Top 20. The tournament is played at both the Anteater Aquatics Complex and Corona del Mar High School, with the Bears getting things started started at 10:30 a.m. Saturday against No. 16 UC Santa Barbara at Anteater Aquatics Complex. Cal will then play either No. 5 UC Irvine or No. 14 UC Davis later Saturday, depending on results of the first set of games. If the Bears win both matches Saturday, they could face off against No. 1 USC on Sunday morning.

Freshman Tarrago Named MPSF/KAP 7 Newcomer Of The Week
Freshman driver Roser Tarrago was named the MPSF/KAP 7 Newcomer of the Week Monday after scoring seven goals in games against No. 11 Long Beach State and No. 16 Santa Clara last weekend. Included in that performance was a six-goal explosion in the victory over the 49ers, tying for the third-most in a single match in school history. It also marked the fourth time a Cal player has won the top newcomer honor this season, with freshman Dora Antal claiming the award three times.

Antal Continues To Pace Conference In Goal-Scoring
Freshman Dora Antal continues to lead the MPSF in scoring with an average of 3.83 goals per game. She scored six goals last weekend to give her 46 for the season, which is already third on Cal’s freshman single-season scoring list. When fellow freshman Roser Tarrago scored six goals against Long Beach State last weekend, it marked just the second time this season Antal didn’t lead the team in scoring. Antal has already been named MPSF/KAP 7 Newcomer of the Week three times.

Last Time Out
The Bears hosted a pair of matches last Saturday and defeated No. 11 Long Beach State and No. 16 Santa Clara by a combined score of 32-13. Freshman Roser Tarrago scored six goals in the victory over the 49ers, including back-to-back scores in the fourth period after Long Beach St. had trimmed Cal’s lead to 9-6. The Bears jumped out to a 9-0 halftime lead over Santa Clara, with eight different players scoring goals.
