No. 23 Cal's final game at the Campbell/Cartier Classic did not go the Golden Bears' way as the team fell to St.  Mary's 4-1 Sunday in San Diego. The Bears leave SoCal with a 5-4 record after going 2-3 in the weekend tournament.

The Gaels outhit the Bears 8-5 and committed no errors to Cal’s four. Senior Victoria Jones drove in Cal’s lone run in a 1-for-3 performance, and junior Cheyenne Cordes scored the run in a 1-for-2 day at the plate.

Cal’s lone run came at the top of the first. Cordes drew a walk to get on base and moved on a fielder’s choice and a wild pitch. With Cordes at third, Jones singled up the middle to drive her home.

St. Mary’s matched the run at the bottom of the second. Andrea Hazel singled and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt, before a misplayed bunt single by Christine Torrise allowed Hazel to capitalize for two bases and the score.

The Gaels took the lead at the bottom of the fifth, starting with a single to right field by Erica Musgrave. She went to second on a wild pitch and then scored on a single down the right line. Another single put two runners on, paving the way for two more runs to cross after Hazel doubled.

Freshman Stephanie Trzcinski (0-3) suffered the loss in 2.2 innings pitched with four hits, three runs, no walks and a strikeout. Sophomore Nisa Ontiveros pitched 3.1 innings, allowing four hits and a run but did not allow a walk. Sarah Lira improved to 4-2 in a complete-game performance, allowing only two walks with two strikeouts.

Cal makes its return to the diamond at the ultra-competitive Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic in Palm Springs, Calif. All four of the Bears’ opponents advanced to the 2013 NCAA Tournament – Texas A&M, Notre Dame, Baylor and Texas. First pitch against Texas A&M is set for Friday, Feb. 21 at 12:30 p.m.
