SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Despite racking up nine hits and a two-run homer from junior Danielle Henderson, Cal fell to its Campbell/Cartier Classic host San Diego State 7-3 Friday evening in San Diego. The Golden Bears are now 4-2 on the season as San Diego State improves to 7-1.

Three costly errors and 11 hits by San Diego State doomed the Bears, but freshman Kylie Reed still managed a 3-for-4 performance with a run scored and junior Danielle Henderson went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run. Junior Cheyenne Cordes also scored a run, and senior Victoria Jones went 2-for-4 with one RBI.

The Aztecs scored two early starting with a walk by right fielder Patrice Jackson. A routine single by center fielder Haley Miles got her three bases following an error and Jackson came home. Sydnee Cable, the designated player, tabbed a single of her own to bring Miles home.

San Diego State tacked on another three at the bottom of the third. A pair of singles and a walk loaded the bases before a three-run double to left center by first baseman Kaitlin Connors made it 5-0.

Cal avoided the shutout with a pair of runs at the top of fifth. With Cordes at first on a walk, Henderson sent a zinger over the fence.

SDSU’s Dominique Dinner led off with a single at the bottom of the sixth then stole second, scoring on an RBI single to left field by Jackson, who moved to second on the throw home. Miles followed with a single up the middle and Jackson crossed the plate, increasing SDSU's lead to 7-2.

The Bears tried to rally at the top of the seventh as Reed connected for her third hit of the day. Henderson followed with a single up the middle and Jones singled to the outfield to drive in Reed for the 7-3 final.

The Bears used three pitchers in the effort, with sophomore Nisa Ontiveros taking her first loss of the season in a 2.1 inning effort. Freshman Taylor Cotton and junior Nikki Owens also pitched in the loss, and SDSU’s Danielle O’Toole stayed perfect (6-0) with eight strikeouts and just one walk allowed.

Cal is set for another doubleheader Saturday with a duel vs. Texas State at 4:30 p.m. followed by a game with Cal State Fullerton at 7 p.m.
