PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. – Three former Cal men’s golfers – James Hahn, Max Homa and Charlie Wi – opened play Thursday at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am with Hahn’s round of 69 at Pebble Beach tying him for 26th to lead the way. One of the highlights of the day was Hahn’s eagle from 99 yards out on the par-five sixth and then the chest bump with his caddie that followed.

“I hit a perfect pitching wedge,” Hahn told PGATOUR.com. “I kept it below the wind. It landed two paces past the pin, spun back and trickled in the back edge. That was really fun.”

The theatrics were not the first time Hahn has gained attention for his celebrations on the course. His “Gangnam Style” dance after making a 19-foot birdie putt on the par-three 16th at the 2013 Waste Management Phoenix Open has well over 300,000 views on PGA TOUR’s official YouTube page and thousands more on video captured by others.

Hahn’s eagle Thursday added to his birdie on the par-five second hole to put him three-under through six holes. He would get to four-under with a birdie on the par-three seventh before falling back to three-under with his lone bogey of the day on the par-four ninth. After a three-under par 33 on the front nine, Hahn would par each of the nine holes on the back to finish at three-under.

Hahn was happy with his round.

“Really happy,” Hahn told PGATOUR.com. “Yesterday I had a practice round out here and shot four-under, that was my lowest round at Pebble. Three-under I’m satisfied with it even though I had a really good start and shot even on the back with nine straight pars. It could have been a lot better, but I’ll save my best for Sunday.”

Wi started on the 10th hole at Spyglass Hill and had an up-and-down opening nine holes with three birdies (par-three 11th, par-three 15th, par-four 17th) and three bogeys (par-four 13th, 14th and 18th). On the back nine he added two more birdies on the par-three third and par-five seventh, while he bogeyed the par-four sixth. He is tied for 73rd.

Homa made his debut at the event with a one-over par 73 playing at Pebble Beach that has him tied for 115th. He birdied his opening hole on the par-four first and made the turn at even-par after another birdie on a 34-yard putt at the par-three fifth and bogeys on the par-five second and par-four eighth. He had back-to-back bogeys on the par-three 12th and par-four 13th before getting one stroke back with a birdie on the par-five 14th. He would bogey the par-three 17th but came up with a par on the par-five 18th.

On the amateur leaderboard Wi and his partner Frank Quattrone are tied for 63rd at five-under par 67, while Hahn and his partner Joe Kernan are tied for 87th at four-under 68, and Homa and his partner Jay Ireland tied for 109th at three-under 69.

Homa (9:44 a.m.) and Hahn (10:39 a.m.) will both tee off from the 10th hole in second round action at Spyglass Hill on Friday, while Wi will start round two on the first tee at Monterey Peninsula Country Club (9:55 a.m.). The completion of the first round will take place Friday before second-round play begins.

Hahn will start Friday’s action five strokes behind first-round leader Andrew Loupe, who shot an eight-under par 63 at Monterey Peninsula Country Club on Thursday.
