PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. – Cheers of ‘Go Bears’ are likely being heard with frequency in the Pebble Beach area this week with plenty of folks associated with the Cal’s men’s golf team involved and in the area for events surrounding this week’s AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am.

Cal head coach Steve Desimone was one of four local college golf coaches who have won national championships that were inducted into the NCGA Hall of Fame on Tuesday night during the California Golf Writers and Broadcasters Association annual banquet.

“Coaching was something that was in me early on, and something that will continue in me as long as I live,” Desimone said.

Desimone won his national title in 2004 when he was also named Golfweek’s Collegiate Coach of the Year.

He repeated the coaching honor in 2012-13 when his  team arguably registered the best season in the history of college golf, breaking the modern-era NCAA single-season win record by capturing 12 victories in 14 stroke-play events. Cal finished the season ranked No. 1 nationally despite falling in match play to Illinois in the national semifinals.

The Golden Bears have won four of their first six stroke-play events in 2013-14, with the returning All-American trio of senior captains Brandon Hagy, Joël Stalter and Michael Weaver leading the way. Unanimous 2012-13 National Player of the Week Michael Kim turned pro following the 2013 fall season, while NCAA and Pac-12 individual medalist Max Homa completed his collegiate eligibility in 2012-13.

Speaking of Homa, he is one of three former Cal players competing in the Pro-Am this week along with James Hahn and Charlie Wi. Homa is playing in the event for the first time and will tee off Thursday from the first hole at Pebble Beach Golf Links at 9:28 a.m. PT.

Homa is playing on one of the seven PGA TOUR exemptions he earned when he tied for sixth at the PGA qualifying school last December.

“I couldn’t imagine doing this a year ago,” Homa told the Contra Costa Times on Wednesday. “Getting to go to school up here kind of makes it even more special. I know I have some teammates and friends coming out, so it makes me appreciate it even more.”

After winning the Pac-12 and NCAA titles in the final month of his collegiate career, Homa qualified for and played in the 2013 U.S. Open and then was on the victorious U.S. Walker Cup team last September.

Hahn is the first former Cal player off the tee also on the first hole of Pebble Beach at 8 a.m., while Wi will start on the 10th tee at Spyglass Hill at 9:39 a.m.
