EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Three former Cal football players – C.J. Anderson (Denver), Marshawn Lynch (Seattle) and Brandon Mebane (Seattle) – are on rosters of teams in Super Bowl XLVIII on Sunday, Feb. 2 at MetLife Stadium. The Broncos and Seahawks will square off at MetLife Stadium with kickoff scheduled for 6:25 p.m. ET/3:25 p.m. PT. The game will be televised by FOX.
Cal has had at least one former player on a Super Bowl roster 12 times in the last 13 seasons. Each member of this year’s trio is in the Super Bowl for the first time in their careers.
Seattle and Denver were both the top seeds in their respective conferences heading into the NFL Playoffs. The Seahawks captured the NFC crown with home victories over New Orleans and San Francisco, while Denver won the AFC title by beating the Chargers and Patriots at home.
A total of 16 former Cal players were on rosters of teams involved in this year’s NFL Playoffs with the Super Bowl trio being joined by Keenan Allen (San Diego), Andre Carter (New England), Brian De La Puente (New Orleans), Lavelle Hawkins (San Diego), DeSean Jackson (Philadelphia), Marvin Jones (Cincinnati), Cameron Jordan (New Orleans), Mychal Kendricks (Philadelphia), Ron Rivera (Carolina, head coach), Aaron Rodgers (Green Bay), Richard Rodgers (Carolina, special teams coordinator), Shane Vereen (New England) and Steve Williams (San Diego).
