STANFORD – The No. 4 Cal women’s water polo team split a pair of matches during the first day of the Stanford Invitational on Saturday, defeating No. 14 San Jose State 9-8 before falling to No. 3 UCLA 10-9 in overtime.
Freshman Roser Tarrago scored a pair of goals in each match in her college debut while fellow freshman and Cal leading scorer Dora Antal also tallied four goals on the day.
Junior Tiera Schroeder and freshman Anna Illes each had three goals in the two matches.
The Bears (7-1) led for most of the match against the Spartans but San Jose St. tied it up at 8-8 early in the fourth period. Illes scored on a penalty shot with 1:58 remaining and Cal held on.
Against the Bruins, the Bears trailed by a slim margin most of the way but tied it up on a goal by Antal with six seconds left in regulation to force overtime.
Freshman goalie Madeline Trabucco made six saves against San Jose St. and 10 against UCLA.
The Bears will return to action in the Stanford Invitational on Sunday morning at 10 a.m. against No. 16 Michigan. A win would put Cal in the third-place game at 2:15 p.m.
