Junior Recaps Successful Weekend At UC Santa Barbara Invitational
By Cal Athletics on Tue, January 28, 2014

What a great week for your Golden Bears! Congratulations to Victoria Williams for being named MPSF/KAP 7 Player of the Week! And great job to Dora Antal for being named Newcomer of the Week for the second time in three weeks! The team is very proud of Victoria and Dora’s accomplishments!

The team as a whole had a very strong tournament this past weekend. We played four games in Santa Barbara and had almost the entire team contribute goals in at least one of the games. Quick shout out to sophomore Meagan Smith and freshman Emily Loughlin for scoring their first goals as California Golden Bears!

Between games, the team was able to spend some time with all of our families that made the trip out to Santa Barbara to support the team. It really was a weekend of reunions as basically everyone had family to support them. Those of us who unfortunately were not able to have our families there were welcomed in with open arms by other parents! We really are a big Cal water polo family! We also had the chance to go over to Tiera Schroeder’s house for a team dinner on Friday night. After feasting on lasagna, salad, garlic bread, and brownies, we sang “Happy Birthday” to Tiera and Pippa Saunders, who had just celebrated their birthdays the week before. The team really is spoiled by all of the food our parents bring to games, and we are very thankful to everyone who feeds us!

Now, it is time to get to know the remaining freshmen: Stephanie Mutafyan and newcomer Roser Tarrago!

Stephanie Mutafyan is a little engine that never stops working. She is very driven and works 110% all of the time. Steph is usually the first to greet me in the locker room and never ceases to ask how my day was. Stephanie is also a massive fan of nutella and all things chocolate. She once asked me to make sure that she didn’t eat anymore nutella at training table. Her resolution didn’t last for that long. I caught her the next day with a piece of toast smothered in it!

Roser (aka Rue) is one of the three international players to join our team this year. She is from Spain and definitely brings some of that Spanish flair to the team. Rue is tiny but is possibly the strongest girl on the team. We haven’t had the chance to play with Rue in any games yet but the team is looking forward to when she uses some of that strength in the water!

This weekend is the Stanford Tournament. It is our first big tournament of the season and the team is very excited for some great competition! GO BEARS!
