WALNUT CREEK, Calif. – For the second time in her young career, California women’s gymnast Charlie Owens is the Pac-12 Freshman of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday. Oregon State's Chelsea Tang is the Gymnast of the Week, and Utah's Georgia Dabritz is the Specialist of the Week.
Last Friday in Tempe, Ariz., Owens helped carry the No. 25 Golden Bears to a near-upset of the No. 23 Sun Devils. The newcomer claimed her first-ever all-around title with a career-high 39.175 and posted new career-highs in three of the meet’s four events. Aside from her all-around title, Owens also finished second on floor with a career-high 9.775, and within the top six in every single event.
This is Owens’ second Freshman of the Week honor and also the second all-time for the Cal program since the award was added. She was also named Freshman of the Week on January 7.
This Friday, the Bears host their second home meet of the season featuring a pivotal Pac-12 matchup between No. 22 Cal and No. 9 UCLA. Meet time is set for 6 p.m. and will be televised live on the Pac-12 Networks. There will be a poster-making station pre-meet and the first 200 fans through the doors will receive Cal sunglasses.
