LA JOLLA, Calif. – Former Cal men’s golfer Michael Kim made a strong pro debut Thursday when he fired a two-under par 70 in the opening-round of the PGA TOUR’s Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines in his hometown. Kim, the unanimous 2012-13 collegiate player of the year, is tied for 29th place at the conclusion of the first round. Kim is six shots off the pace of first-round leader Stewart Cink after his eight-under par 64.

A native of Del Mar, Calif., Kim’s round Thursday at the Torrey Pines North Course he has played often featured three birdies including his first hole as a pro on the par-five No. 1. He also birdied his third and fourth par-fives of the round on holes No. 14 and No. 18. His lone bogey came on the par-four No. 11. Kim made par on each of the other 14 holes.

Kim is one of four former Cal men’s golfers in the event, along with James Hahn, collegiate teammate Max Homa and Charlie Wi. Wi is tied for 63rd after opening play with an even-par 72 on Thursday. Homa shot a one-over par 73 and is tied for 88th, while Hahn is tied for 152nd after an eight-over par 80.

Kim, the low amateur at the 2013 U.S. Open who finished tied for 17th overall at the event, was the world’s top-ranked amateur when he announced he was turning pro last December 19 in the middle of his junior season at Cal. Kim was Cal’s first national player of the year in men’s collegiate golf as a sophomore in 2012-13 when he swept the Haskins Award, Golfstat Cup, Golfweek/Sagarin Player of the Year and Nicklaus Award. Kim also earned first-team PING Division I All-American and All-West Region honors, was the Pac-12 Men's Golfer of the Year, one of three finalists for The Ben Hogan Award, and an individual medalist a single-season school-record four times for a Cal team that won 12 of 14 stroke-play tournaments to set a modern-era NCAA single-season record and was No. 1 in the final rankings by both Golfweek and Golfstat despite losing to Illinois in the match-play semifinals of the NCAA Championship.
