BERKELEY – The Cal men’s water polo program had the second-most academic honorees in the conference as nine Golden Bears were named to the 2013 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation All-Academic team, it was announced today (Jan. 17) by MPSF executive director Al Beaird. Seniors Giacomo Cupido, Michael Boggan and Hunter Gettelfinger; juniors Aleksa Saponjic, Jon Sibley, Luka Ivanovic, Matt Russell and Blake Kelly; and sophomore Thomas Agramonte; were all noted by the league office for their academic achievements.
Proving they perform at a high level whether it is in the pool or in the classroom, the Cal men’s water polo program trailed only UC Irvine for the most academic honorees among MPSF schools. In 2012, the Bears had 12 players earn All-Academic honors, the most in the MPSF.
To be eligible for the MPSF All-Academic Team, an athlete must have a 3.0 or better cumulative GPA, must be at least a sophomore academically, and must have competed in fifty percent or more of a team's matches.
Everist’s squad finished the 2013 campaign 18-8 and captured its final two matches of the 2013 MPSF Tournament. Gettelfinger was named the team MVP and earlier (Dec. 3), Kirk Everist’s squad had four players – Gettelfinger, senior Collin Smith, Saponjic and sophomore Colin Mulcahy – named to the 2013 MPSF All-Conference team. Gettelfinger and Smith were tabbed second-team honorees, while Saponjic and sophomore Mulcahy were honorable mention selections.
