2014 Australian Masters of the Amateurs

MELBOURNE, Australia – Cal senior Brandon Hagy shot a two-under par 72 on Thursday to move up another three spots into a tie for seventh place with one round remaining at the 2014 Australian Master of the Amateurs. The 72-hole event that began Tuesday with a field of 54 players will conclude Friday on the West Course of the Royal Melbourne Golf Club.

Hagy (72-73-70 – 215, -1) trails third-round co-leaders Todd Sinnott (74-69-70 – 210, -6) and Simon Viitakangas (70-70-70 – 210, -6) of Australia by five strokes each and is the third American listed on the leader board behind third-place Cameron Wilson (72-69-71 – 212, -4) and Max Buckley (72-71-71 – 214, -2), who is tied for fifth.

After a wild up-and-down round Wednesday that included an eagle, three birdies and five bogeys, Hagy made par Thursday on 15 of 18 holes. He started strong with an eagle on the second hole and a birdie on the fourth, both par-fives. He then made par on each of his next nine holes before his lone bogey of the round on the par-four 14th. He finished with four more pars in a row.

Hagy begins fourth and final-round action Friday with his tee time and pairings still to be announced.

Hagy is playing in the event for the second consecutive season. He finished 20th in his debut in 2013.

The 2014 Australian Master of the Amateurs Green Jacket Champion will receive an exemption into the 2014 Brabazion Trophy UK, 2014 Amateur Championship UK, Porter Cup USA, The Players Amateur USA, The Dogwood Invitational USA and the Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship CAN.

Hagy and the remainder of the Cal team will resume its 2013-14 collegiate season when the Golden Bears open the 2014 spring portion of their schedule January 27-28 at the Arizona Intercollegiate. Cal won three of five events during the fall of 2013, while posting third and fourth-place finishes in its other two tournaments to give the Bears 21 victories over their last 33 stroke-play events since the beginning of the 2011-12 season and top-five finishes in all 33.
