WALNUT CREEK, Calif. – Pac-12 gymnastics coaches project the California women’s gymnastics team to finish seventh in the conference this season, the Pac-12 offices announced today.
Cal fell one point short of the sixth-place projection as the Bears received 17 points and Washington received 18, while UCLA was selected as the preseason favorite for the third year in a row with 46 points and five first-place votes. Utah (45) and Stanford (37) round out the top three, followed by Oregon State (31), Arizona (22), Washington, Cal and Arizona State (8).
Last season, the Bears finished seventh at the Pac-12 Championships after being projected to finish eighth in the preseason coaches poll. Cal advanced to the NCAA Gymnastics Regional Championships for the first time as a team since 2007, and this year enters with a preseason ranking of No. 22 in the nation – the first time since 2005 the program has been ranked in the preseason top 25.
Cal opens the season on Sunday, Jan. 5th at the NorCal meet featuring Sacramento State, Stanford, UC Davis and San Jose State in Sacramento, Calif. The home opener in Haas Pavilion is set for Friday, Jan. 17 vs. Utah at 7 p.m.
