BERKELEY – Cal’s women’s water polo team will play at least 16 teams ranked in the final 2013 Collegiate Water Polo Association poll in its 2014 schedule that was announced today.
The Bears, who went 17-7 last season and finished ranked No. 5 in the country, open the season Jan. 11 against Pacific in the California Speedo Cup. The one-day tournament at Spieker Aquatics Complex also features 2013 NCAA runner-up Stanford.
Cal will also participate in the UC Davis Tournament, the UC Santa Barbara Tournament, the Stanford Invitational and the prestigious UC Irvine Invitational. The Stanford Invitational features traditional powers San Jose State, UCLA and Michigan. The field hasn’t been set yet for the UC Irvine Invitational but will be made up of the top-16 teams in the country.
The Bears open Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play at home on March 8 against San Jose State. Cal also hosts MPSF matches against UCLA and CSU Bakersfield. The 2014 MPSF Championships will take place at USC on April 25-27.
Cal returns four starters from last season, including junior Tiera Schroeder, who competed with Team USA last summer at the World Junior Championships. Lone senior Ashley Young was the Bears’ second-leading scorer last season with 36 goals.
