Bears Shine in First Day of Winter Nationals

The Cal men's swimming team represented itself well during the first day (Dec. 5) of the 2013 Winter Nationals in Knoxville, Tenn., starting with a second-place finish in the 200 free relay.

KNOXVILLE, TENN. – The Cal men’s swimming team represented itself well during the first day (Dec. 5) of the 2013 Winter Nationals in Knoxville, Tenn., starting with a second-place finish in the 200 free relay (1:17.78) behind strong swims from freshman Ryan Murphy, sophomore Tyler Messerschmidt, junior Henry Chung and junior Seth Stubblefield.

David Durden’s squad also garnered a pair of fourth-place finishes. Senior Jeremy Bagshaw was fourth in the 500 free with a time of 4:16.15, while sophomore Josh Prenot finished fourth in the 200 IM with a mark of 1:44.18.

In the 50 free it was Cal alumnus Nathan Adrian bringing home the gold as he placed first with a time of 18.89 for Cal Aquatics. Messerschmidt was seventh in the 50 free with a time of 19.64.

In the final event of the day, the Golden Bears’ 400 medley relay team of Murphy, Prenot, Stubblefield and senior Fabio Gimondi placed fifth with a mark of 3:10.56.
