BERKELEY - California Golden Bears defender Steve Birnbaum is one of 29 finalists for the Soccer News Net College Boot Player of the Year award, the site announced this week. The editors of each of the sites in the Soccer News Net network nominated up to four local players for the award, each of which will be eligible for the regional player of the year award. Nine additional at-large selections rounded out the nominations.
Fans from across the country will be able to vote for the top collegiate player. Voting will be open until December 19, and will be conducted on Big Apple Soccer, Chicagoland Soccer News, LA Soccer News, New England Soccer News, Philly Soccer News, Dallas Soccer News, DC Soccer News, and Sunshine Soccer News.
Online fan voting will account for 40% of the total toward the award. The remaining 60% of the vote will be cast by the Soccer News Net editorial staff. The winner of the popular vote will receive the Soccer News Net Supporter's Choice Award.

Birnbaum has scored a team-leading ten goals and has also added an assist in his 17 appearances for Cal. He scored the gamewinning goal in the 35th minute of the Bears' 3-1 win over Bradley in the second round of the NCAA Tournament this past Sunday. The Irvine, Calif. native was garnered All-Pac-12 First Team and Pac-12 All-Academic honorable mention honrs during his senior campaign.
The fourth-seeded Bears (13-4-2, 6-3-1 Pac-12) host Coastal Carolina (19-4-0, 9-1-0 Big South) on Sunday, Dec. 1 at Goldman Field at 1:30 p.m. PT in a third round match. Fans can purchase tickets on the day of the game at Edwards Stadium's box office with cash only. Adults are $10, while seniors, students and youths cost $5 per ticket.
