BERKELEY – The No. 23 Cal women’s volleyball team couldn’t overcome the loss of two starters to injuries and fell to Washington State on Sunday, 21-25, 16-25, 25-22, 25-23, 15-10 at Haas Pavilion.
Junior Christina Higgins had a career-high 26 kills and sophomore middle blocker Lillian Schonewise added 12 kills, but the Bears played without leading attacker and team captain Adrienne Gehan and starting middle blocker Lara Vukasovic, who each sat out with injuries.
Sophomore outside hitter Michelle Neumayr had 11 kills and a career-high 25 digs and freshman libero Maddy Kerr also had 25 digs for the Bears (17-10, 10-8 Pac-12), who lost to the Cougars for the first time since 2002.
Cal honored Gehan and fellow senior and starting setter Joan Caloiaro before the match in a special Senior Day ceremony.
The Bears return to the court Wednesday when they visit Arizona State at 1 p.m. PT.
