No. 1 Cal Swims to UNLV Fall Invitational Title

Bears complete three-day meet with 17 victories in 18 finals.

LAS VEGAS, Nev. – California wrapped up the final night of the UNLV Fall Invitational with another impressive showing Saturday, with the No. 1 Golden Bears taking first place in five of six events. Over the course of the three days of competition, Cal won 17 of 18 finals against eight other squads.

Overall, the Bears claimed the team title with 1,278 points, followed by runner-up Arizona State (429.5), UCLA (394) and host UNLV (388.5).

Cal entered only one swimmer in the 1650-yard freestyle, and Catherine Breed came through with a time of 16:38.13, which put her in second place.

A short time later, the Bears swept the top four positions in the 200 backstroke, led by Missy Franklin’s winning time of 1:53.73. Fellow freshman Sophia Batchelor took second in 1:54.61, with Stephanie Au third in 1:57.35 and Melanie Klaren fourth in 1:57.84. Cindy Tran also reached the A final and placed sixth in 1:58.33.

Up next was the 100 free, and again the Bears flexed their muscles. Elizabeth Pelton posted a victorious time of 48.71, just edging out Franklin, who finished in 48.83. Rachael Acker took third in 49.43, and Camille Cheng was sixth in 50.67. Caroline Piehl prevailed in the B final in 49.89.

Cal secured five of the top seven spots in the 200 breaststroke. Marina Garcia led the way in 2:10.98, as Celina Li was second in 2:13.72. In addition, Taylor Young was third (2:15.26), Melissa Bates fourth (2:18.98) and Yvette Kong seventh (2:20.78).

In the last individual event, Li picked up a victory in the 200 butterfly after touching the wall in 1:57.55, just ahead of Batchelor’s 1:57.68. Breed placed fourth in 2:01.14, Taylor Nanfria was seventh in 2:04.65 and K.T. Livingstone was eighth in 2:04.88.

The Bears concluded the meet with a sweep of the top three places in the 400 free relay. Alicia Grima, Piehl, Tran and Franklin finished a 1.5 seconds ahead of the field in 3:16.42. Li, Cheng, Farida Osman and Pelton were next in 3:17.92, while Kristen Vredeveld, Kaylin Bing, Rachel Bootsma and Acker took third in 3:18.82.

Cal is next in action at AT&T Winter Nationals in Knoxville, Tenn. The Bears resume dual-meet action at home vs. Arizona State and Arizona Jan. 24-25.
