BERKELEY – The Cal women’s volleyball team is taking an international trip to Switzerland, Italy, Slovenia and Croatia next spring, head coach Rich Feller announced.
Under NCAA rules, teams are permitted to take a foreign tour once every four years. This will be the first international trip the Bears have taken in Feller’s 15 years at the helm.
“We’re very excited to be making our first-ever foreign tour,” Feller said. “Other teams that we have competed with every year have done so in the past and everyone has relayed that is was a great, positive experience, both for the athletics and the cultural growth of their team.”
The Bears will leave the Bay Area on May 24 and return on June 7. Cal will play matches against various club and nationally sponsored teams from the different countries it will visit as well as get a cultural education.
The trip will be paid for exclusively through fundraising efforts. The program has already raised about 50 percent of the money required. The Bears are currently 17-8 (10-6 Pac-12) and ranked No. 23 in the nation. Cal plays its final home matches of the 2013 season this weekend, beginning tonight against No. 3 Washington at 6 p.m. The Bears then host Washington State on Sunday at 11 a.m. on Senior Day.
