Cal to Honor Seven Seniors Sunday Versus UC Irvine

It will be a special day for Cal men's water polo Sunday (Nov. 17) when the Bears host UC Irvine at 11 a.m. at Spieker Aquatics Complex as Kirk Everist's squad will be honoring its seven seniors.

BERKELEY – It will be a special day for the Cal men’s water polo program this Sunday (Nov. 17) when the No. 5-ranked Golden Bears (15-6, 3-3 in the MPSF) host No. 9 UC Irvine at 11 a.m. at Spieker Aquatics Complex. Kirk Everist’s squad will be honoring its seven seniors – Michael Boggan, Giacomo Cupido, Hunter Gettelfinger, Ayal Keren, Miquel Martin de Bustamante, Scott Siegel and Collin Smith – who will be competing in their final home match of their collegiate careers.

Goalie Michael Boggan, from Burbank, Calif., currently has 211 career saves with 22 assists and 16 steals entering Sundays match after recording 10 saves Thursday in the Bears’ 11-4 win over Santa Clara. Last season, Boggan was the recipient of the team’s Golden Bear Coaches’ Award and was both ACWPC and an MPSF All-Academic selection, majoring in economics.

Attacher Giacomo Cupido, from Santa Margherita Ligure, Italy, has been a top defender for Cal every since his freshman year when he participated in the 2010 NCAA title match versus USC. Giacomo enters the UC Irvine contest with 46 career goals with 124 steals, 103 assists, 26 field blocks and 17 ejections earned. He has been an ACWPC All-Academic selection all three years majoring in political economies of industrial societies.

A 2012 honorable mention All-American, Hunter Gettelfinger is having an outstanding senior campaign as one of the squad’s top all-round players with 26 assists and 21 steals. The San Diego native, who is a three-time ACWPC and MPSF All-Academic selection majoring in American studies, currently has 55 career goals with 112 steals, 79 assists, 39 ejections earned and 29 field blocks.

Ayal Keren from Tivon, Israel is currently injured, but as a junior college transfer who arrived in 2011, he has scored 20 goals with 48 ejections earned, 28 steals, 10 assists and four field blocks in only 29 career matches for the Bears.

Miquel Martin de Bustamante from Los Altos Hills, Calif. was a three-year varsity member for Kirk Everist before becoming a student assistant coach in 2013, contributing to the squad with his statistical analysis, as well as coaching the team’s Gold Squad.

Attacker Scott Siegel from San Diego earned a letter in 2012 and on Thursday notched his first career goal with an outstanding shot on a fourth quarter counterattack versus Santa Clara

The Bears’ final senior to honor will be 2012 first-team All-American and 2013 team captain Collin Smith from Carlsbad, Calif. One of the program’s most prolific scorers and top all-around players, Smith has garnered 127 career goals with 86 assists, 86 steals, 29 ejections earned and 28 field blocks. He has been a standout every since his freshman year, playing in the 2010 NCAA title match, and earning honorable mention All-America honors as a sophomore in 2011.
