BERKELEY – Head coach Brett McClure announced Friday that the California men's gymnastics team signed one recruit to a national letter of intent. Santa Rosa gymnast Yordan Aleksandrov will join the Golden Bears in the fall of 2014 and brings with him a lot of high-level experience and promise.
“Yordan brings world class gymnastics and Olympic potential to the Golden Bear men's gymnastics team,” said McClure. “We are thrilled to add this Bay Area native as he brings international experience, competing for the Bulgarian National Team at the 2013 World Championships. His gymnastics has impeccable lines as well as execution and he is a solid All-Around gymnast. His passion for the sport is contagious and we cannot wait for him to arrive on campus next fall.”
Aleksandrov, who attends Casa Grande high school in Petaluma, competed at the men’s Junior Olympic National Championships in Portland, Ore. in May of this year. He won the gold medal on the horizontal bar and a silver on the parallel bars in the 17-18 age group, while finishing eighth in the all-around competition. He also recently competed in the 2013 World Championships in Antwerp, Belgium in September, representing the Bulgarian National Team.
A dual citizen of Bulgaria and the United States, Aleksandrov and his family moved stateside when he was just seven years old. His focus now is helping the Bears in Berkeley bring home a national championship, while also keeping an eye on his goal of representing his home Bulgaria in the 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.
San Mateo native Nathaniel Ramil and San Francisco native Michael Rauchwerger will also be joining Aleksandrov and the Bears for the 2014-15 season. Ramil, who attends Aragon high school in San Mateo, is an excellent all-around gymnast who figures to add a very well-rounded dynamic to the Golden Bears. Rauchwerger attends Lick-Wilmerding high school in San Francisco and recently was a member of the junior gymnastics team representing the United States at the 19th Maccabiah Games, which were held in Israel in July of this year.
The Bears open this season on Saturday, Jan. 11 at 1 p.m. PT when they host “The Big Meet” against Stanford at Berkeley. The full 2014 schedule can be found on the team’s page at CalBears.com here.
